Welcome to Big Blue Coffee Roasters!

Located in Hustontown, Pennsylvania, Big Blue began roasting in 2019 with the dream of bringing fresh roasted, locally crafted coffee into the lives and homes of those around us. For 6 years, we have connected a community of coffee drinkers from every walk of life, all through bonding over really good coffee. 

One saying that has stuck with us throughout life:

This golden rule is our entire foundation. At Big Blue, we are committed to delivering quality service to our local community and the people we meet along the way, ensuring all of our coffee is roasted with love from beginning to end.

Our Offerings

At Big Blue, our coffee is sourced from communities of farmers working tirelessly to generate income for their families and in turn, providing the world with premium coffee beans. We can always put a name or a cooperative to the coffee we roast and aim to highlight the efforts of these farmers who deserve all the recognition. While you won’t find many blends at Big Blue, what you will find is traceable, single sourced lots of arabica coffee that has a story to tell.

While not all of these farmers can afford organic, fair trade or alliance related certifications, that does not mean our coffee is grown in harsh conditions, quite the opposite. Through research and sourcing protocols, we ensure that all of our offerings are cultivated and processed in a sustainable, ethical manner that meets all of our organic growing standards.

Fluid Bed Roasting

From the beginning, our mission began with two things in mind, coffee should not only taste great, but should also be good on the stomach. Fluid bed roasting offers the best approach to achieving this goal. This method of roasting uses forced hot air to roast the beans, ensuring oxygenated air passes over the coffee in a centrifugal manner until a desired roast has been accomplished.

While chaff, the thin outer coating of a coffee bean, is completely collected and separated during this process, drum roasters can collect chaff inside the roaster and over time this chaff will burn and carbonize. When this occurs, chaff becomes carcinogenic and will leave residue on the coffee beans in further roasts. Our chaff is never burnt, but instead is left light and fluffy to use as composting mulch on our garden beds!

Fluid bed roasting leaves a cleaner, smoother taste compared to the bitter, smoky taste that can accompany traditional gas drum roasters and at Big Blue, that standard of quality is reflected in every roast. Try now and taste the difference!

Catch us in 2025!

On May 25th, 2023 we celebrated the launch of our mobile coffee shop and new beginnings for Big Blue Coffee Roasters. 

Our menu highlights a passion for Italian Espresso, new age crafted brews and most importantly, a fresh cup of coffee. What seems to be lost in today’s trends, we still believe that the backbone of a coffee company lies in the cup they serve, not the artificial flavors and sugars used to hide it. Creating a company free of preservatives, food dyes and toxic ingredients is what we here at Big Blue strive for and is what motivates us above all else. 

Our drinks highlight the coffees we roast, just as our mobile coffee shop highlights Jen and I’s love of bringing everyone we meet together under one roof. Young or old, we greet each interaction with a smile and look forward to every conversation to be had that day. We are in eternal gratitude to the friends we have made along the way and those who have supported us on our journey.
